How SMEs Can Participate in the SBTi

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) plays a crucial role in driving corporate climate action. Large organizations like Unilever, Ahold Delhaize, and Heineken have already committed to science-based targets. Companies in various sectors, from retail to industry and logistics, are now also requiring their suppliers to follow suit, expecting them to commit and set science-based CO₂ reduction targets. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), aligning with the SBTi is becoming more important than ever. In this blog, we’ll guide you through the steps your business can take to partake in the SBTi.

What is the SBTi?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) provides a globally recognized framework for companies to set science-based emission reduction targets. These targets aim to limit global warming to 1.5°C, in line with the Paris Agreement. Companies submit their CO₂ reduction targets to the SBTi, which then validates whether these targets are aligned with climate science.

Why should SMEs consider committing to the SBTi?

  • Meet supply chain requirements: Large companies are increasingly demanding that their suppliers meet sustainability criteria. In some cases, a formal SBTi commitment is even a prerequisite to remain part of the supply chain.
  • Take concrete climate action: The SBTi framework pushes companies beyond good intentions. Your company will need to set measurable, science-based reduction targets. This means developing a credible transition plan to actually reduce emissions.
  • Build trust and visibility with stakeholders: A validated SBTi target signals to clients, government bodies, and the general public that your company is taking climate responsibility seriously. It can strengthen your company’s position in tenders, financing, and it can uplift your broader reputation.

How to apply for a SBTi commitment

If your company is ready to get started, here’s what the process looks like:

  1. Register via the SBTi Validation Portal: Begin by submitting your company’s details, such as size, sector, and number of employees. Based on this information, the SBTi will determine whether you qualify for the standard Corporate pathway or the streamlined SME pathway.
  2. Calculate your base year CO₂ footprint: Your base year is typically the most recent year with complete data. You’ll need to account for all Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions (e.g., energy use, business travel). This baseline will serve as the reference point for your future reductions.
  3. Set your emissions reduction targets: Determine the relative reduction you aim to achieve relative to your base year. You can choose to set only near-term targets (5–10 years), or include long-term targets aligned with net-zero goals by 2050. The SBTi ensures that your targets meet the latest scientific criteria.
  4. Submit your targets and pay for validation: Once your targets are ready, submit them along with supporting CO₂ footprint data. After submitting, you’ll need to pay the validation fee. If your SBTi submission doesn’t yet meet the criteria, you’ll receive feedback and have the opportunity to revise and resubmit.
  5. Communicate your validated targets: Publicly share your SBTi-approved targets, both internally and externally. You can do this via your website, in client meetings, and through your listing on the SBTi Target Dashboard. This demonstrates that your company is actively implementing science-based climate action.
